Pure alexia results from the disruption or the disconnection of the visual word form area, a region reproducibly located within the left occipito-temporal sulcus and encoding the abstract identity of strings of visual letters. 
We found consistently increasing responses in bilateral posterior occipito-temporal sulcus (pOTS), at an anatomical location that closely matches the "visual word form area".
It is thought to result from the disruption or the disconnection of the visual word form area (VWFA), a region reproducibly located within the left occipito-temporal sulcus, and encoding the abstract identity of strings of visual letters.
HSA was frequently associated with a deep, vertical collateral/occipito-temporal sulcus and a steep hippocampal fissure.
Eventually, an invariant representation of letter identities is created in the visual word form area (VWFA), reproducibly located within the left occipito-temporal sulcus.
Branched collaterals are common; and three of seven reconstructed axons branched to both TEav and to the lateral bank of the occipito-temporal sulcus, itself a major source of inputs to TEav.
Ipsilateral cortical areas which projected into V4 included area 18 (V2), the inferior parietal cortex, the anterior and posterior parts of the superior temporal sulcus, the frontal eye fields and the temporo-basal association cortex on the lateral half of the parahippocampal gyrus and around the occipito-temporal sulcus.
